SUMMER 2013 NEWSLETTER
We are heading into Summer rapidly after an one eventful Sunday. In May we normally celebrate Lei Day with a concert by the Waialua High and Intermediate School Band. This year we were adding the new after-school A+ Ukulele class from the Waialua Elementary School that the Friends of the Bandstand support.
However, when the big day came it was a wet one and we had to cancel the event. I am happy to say that it was only the third time we have had to cancel one of our Sunday concerts and the first one that wasn’t the Royal Hawaiian Band. The June concert went off as scheduled without a drop of rain.
I am pleased to report that the new ukulele program at Waialua Elementary School
is very popular with the kids and the school and the Friends of the Bandstand. There is a waiting list of kids that didn’t get in the first round and that is with up to 20 students in a class. We have bought new ukuleles and support the instructor who also a volunteer at the school so all the kids already know him and he them. The Friends are very pleased with the success of the program as it is the only school program that has come forward with a request for support so far. We thank all those whose contributions have made this program the success it is. And the other success of our school music program support.
The Hawaii Opera Theater program that has been well received at the Elementary School for the past two years, is on track to come again in the Spring of 2014. We will try to get our bid in early enough to get them to put on two performances so that more of the students can be participants as they really enjoy be part of it. Early in Spring for the past two years we participated in the Taste of Waialua that gives us another opportunity to reach the public. However, this year to promoters canceled the activity so we didn’t have the day in the sun at the old Sugar Mill that we have had previously. We hope that it will go on again next year. As to the schedule of concerts, we have every first Sunday filled for the rest of the year with the usual variety of performers. And our corporate supporters are continuing to offer their financial support that make our operations possible. For those of you who are wondering about renewal notices, our member who manages that program has had some personal problems that have prevented her from making the progress she had hoped to. However, we do expect that the notices will be flowing out before long. We depend on the donations from our Friends so please respond generously when you get the request, Mahalo.
I will close by saying the Friends of Waialua Bandstand is alive and well. I hope to
see many of you at our monthly concerts at the Bandstand. Check the website for the
schedule.
