From the Chair, Winter 2011-2012 |

The year 2011 has nearly slipped below the horizon and it has been a successful one for the Friends of Waialua Bandstand in the Park. We had no rain-outs this year and all the performances went on as scheduled. The last three concerts presented a Navy brass band, a Marine band and the American Legion Band from Holland, Michigan. The latter was a particular hit with all who attended. The band had asked if they could play at our bandstand while they were here to attend the ceremonies marking the 70th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. There were 50 band members and slightly more “followers” that filled the park. It was a grand affair and the band leader expressed a desire to come back sometime. Special thanks go to Kendra Martyn for her hard work coordinating all aspects of the concert in great fashion. Mahalo, Kendra! We will start off the New Year a week late. Because the first Sunday in January, 2012 is New Years Day the Board has decided to delay the first concert to the second Sunday, January 8. It will be our pleasure once more to start the year with the Royal Hawaiian Band, the one group that we feature twice each year. And then in February we will again defer to the National Football League and not have a concert that would conflict with Super Bowl Sunday. Financially we are in the black thanks in part to a very generous donation from Sky Dive Hawaii. All of our regular supporters have made their usual donations as well so we are trying to find other ways to spend some of the excess funds. So far the School Music Program Grant program has had limited success. The proposal to support the after-school program at Waialua Elementary School is still on hold waiting for them to get instructors on board. In the interim another program for the same school was presented and approved by the Board. It will bring the Hawaii Opera Theater to Waialua Elementary School in April, 2012 to present Verdi’s “Aida” in a special adaptation that includes participation by students in various ways. We look forward to that show as it may lead to other similar efforts in the community. For those that have continued reading this to the end I wish you all a very Happy Holiday Season and best wishes for the New Year.
